Taking a step back to leap forward: The power of perspective

We often perceive progress as a linear trajectory. From Point A to Point B, with no detours, no interruptions, and no steps backward. But what if this isn’t the only way? What if, at times, it’s not even the best way?

Upon returning from a refreshing three-week holiday, my wife and I shared our feelings about our first week back. The warmth of familial conversations and the insights from numerous books I had dived into were still fresh in my mind. This vacation wasn’t just a break; it was an enriching retreat.

Stephen R. Covey, in his celebrated book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” coins a term that perfectly captures this essence: “Sharpen the Saw.” It means periodically taking time off work to rejuvenate, reinvent, and re-energize ourselves. By renewing our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual dimensions, we’re not just maintaining our abilities but enhancing them. Just like the saw that gets sharper with regular care, our effectiveness in daily life amplifies when we practice self-renewal.

My wife, a clinical psychologist, reflected on her week. She marveled at the new perspectives she’d discovered and how seamlessly her therapy sessions unfolded. Her keen sense of observation, inherent to her profession, enables her to read between the lines. It was even more astounding to witness this transformation in her. Her sentiments resonated with my own feelings. The post-vacation week was pleasant at work and brimming with fresh ideas and clarity on the direction I sought for personal development.

It brought to mind the saying, “Can’t see the forest for the trees.” At times, our daily grind can make us shortsighted. We focus intently on the immediate task or problem, often failing to see the bigger picture. This tunnel vision restricts our creativity, problem-solving capabilities, and overall well-being.

However, when we intentionally zoom out, even momentarily, from our routine, we gain a panoramic view of our lives. It allows us to see the entirety of the forest, not just the trees obstructing our immediate view. This refreshed perspective can reignite passion, introduce new viewpoints, and foster innovation.

But it’s crucial to understand that taking a step back isn’t a regression or a sign of weakness. It’s a deliberate strategy for growth. Like a sprinter on a track, we sometimes need to get into a favorable position before we can leap forward with full force.

So, if you ever find yourself stuck in a routine or overwhelmed by the intricacies of daily life, remember the power of perspective and Covey’s advice to “Sharpen the Saw.” Consider stepping back, even if momentarily. Your personal and professional life may not only benefit from it, but it is the key to making that next monumental leap forward.
